Brother Walter T. Jackson, III began his musical career at the age of thirteen, playing trumpet in the I.E. Johnson High School beginner's band.

Brother Jackson advanced on his horn through high school, and when he began his studies at North Carolina Central University he chose to major in Music with a specialization on trumpet.
During his high school years, Brother Jackson participated in jazz band and combos. He was selected for the All-State band in 1967. Brother Jackson also served as trumpet section leader in the marching band and as a soloist in the stage band while he was a student at NCCU.
